Exeter Friendly Society

The background

South West Communications Group provides Exeter Friendly Society with an extension to its IT department with co-location space for its servers which can be accessed at any time using leased line technology.

Exeter Friendly Society, based in Emperor Way, Exeter, was established in 1927 to provide private medical insurance. As a friendly society, it has no shareholders and concentrates all its efforts on providing an excellent service to its members.

The challenge

Exeter Friendly Society’s web servers were being hosted in the Society’s offices and it recognised this posed a potential risk. There was also just a single Internet connection - if this became faulty, the Society’s website would go offline, thus losing one of its most important communication tools to its members.

The Society also needed to co-locate additional servers at an alternative site but needed constant access to the data stored on these.

The solution

South West Communications Group provided Exeter Friendly Society with its co-location service for all its servers with a direct leased line wide area network (WAN) connection to its industry-leading data centre as part of a single solution that included the following:

  • Rackspace, power and support for its servers
  • Managed firewalls for security
  • Direct WAN connection via a dedicated 100Mb leased line
  • High speed Internet bandwidth
  • Resilience
  • Peace of mind
