Data Centre facilities list

South West Communications Group’s tier-4 networked Data Centre, located in its Exeter headquarters, offers a highly resilient infrastructure with no single point of failure that is built to leading edge standards to provide the best in class for security, environment, power, fire prevention and network connectivity. Public access is strictly forbidden and is only allowed within common areas under strict security conditions. All entrances and common areas are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week via closed circuit cameras. These are the technical facilities it offers to South West Communications Group’s business clients.

Multiple fat pipes from multiple providers (use subheading text style here and for the others on this page)

• Direct fibre connections from six telecommunications providers

• Fibre and copper connections from two separate BT exchanges

• Multiple 100Mbps Internet peering circuits

• Each Internet peering circuit is provided by a different telecommunications provider to gain maximum separation and resilience

• Diversely routed circuits to avoid a JCB digging up all of the Data Centre’s connections

• Peering points in north & south of the UK

• Direct connections to Internet backbone in Telehouse and Harbour Exchange, Docklands, London

• Circuits delivered over SDH resilient circuits

• 720Gbps backbone: plenty of bandwidth available

Infrastructure built purely on Cisco equipment

• All components are duplicated

• No single point of failure

• Standards based infrastructure

• Cisco has 80 per cent of Internet connectivity market

Data Centre cabinets

• Space for 120 cabinets in phase one

• Phase two’s capacity is for 240 cabinets

• Each cabinet has 40U of useable space

• Rack space can be spread across multiple cabinets

• Cabinets are 600mm wide and 1,000mm deep

Firewall protection

• All Data Centre equipment protected by pairs of firewalls

• All ports except Port 80 (HTTP) are blocked as a default.

• Firewalls restrict unwanted access to servers.

• If one firewall goes faulty, the Data Centre is still protected.

Fire protection

• Each cabinet has an individual fire detection system

• Sniffer system used to detect particles given off when components heat up

• Sniffer system detects particles per million before fire combusts

• If particles are detected, the power to that cabinet is automatically turned off

• This system does not allow fires to start as the energy used to fuel them is removed

Resilient power supply

• Each cabinet is individually fused at 32amps

• Cabinets are spread across all 3 electrical phases

• Servers spread across cabinets provides more power resilience at no extra cost

• UPS supports all Data Centre equipment

• N + 3 UPS system (4 x UPSs) for resilience

• Standby power generator support all

• Data Centre equipment

• Two power feeds into the building

• Totally self-sufficient if mains fail for even for several months

Restricted access

• Multiple restricted secure areas

• Card swipe entry systems

• Electronic CCTV surveillance inside and outside of the Data Centre

• Customers are not allowed in the Data Centre cabinet area so they can be assured that no-one will tamper with their server equipment

Workshop area

• Provided for customer’s use

• Workshop can be used to upgrade server equipment

• Unique customer login facility for access to each server via KVM switching matrix

• Tea & coffee facilities available for customers

Managed servers

• Rental of HP and Dell servers supplied by South West Communications Group

• Rental of Internet bandwidth connected to server equipment via a 100BaseT connection

• Rental of electrical power (measured in amps) 24-hour monitoring

• 24-hour support of server hardware and operating system (Microsoft Windows)

• Optional storeiP disk to disk backup or tape backup

• Managed firewall support

• 1,000mm cabinet depth

Co-located servers

• Rental of Data Centre rack space

• Rental of Internet bandwidth connected to server equipment via a 100BaseT connection

• Rental of electrical power (measured in amps)

Internet bandwidth

• Available in 256Kbps-100Mbps per connection

• Unlike most hosting companies, there is no data transfer charge per month

• The bandwidth can be utilised constantly at full capacity without additional charges

• The bandwidth is allowed to peak above the set bandwidth in short bursts

• Browser based bandwidth utilisation statistics provided to customers

• The Data Centre’s multiple Internet connections ensure that your websites are always available

ISP facilities

• Dial In 0845 Internet access

• PSTN/ISDN dial up Internet access

• ADSL Max Internet access (up to 8Mbps download, 832Kbps upload)

• Leased line Internet access (64Kbps–1Gbps)

• Supply of managed routers at customer sites

• Supply of managed firewalls at customer sites

• Email services

• Email anti-virus/anti-spam scanning service

• Shared web space

• Support for Microsoft, Unix, Linux, Apple Mac & Novell operating systems as well as servers, desktop PCs and laptops

• Data backed up to either South West Communications Group’s Exeter or Portsmouth data storage systems via the Internet  

• Data is securely encrypted using 128bit and 448bit encryption  

• Available in 5Gb increments - no upper limit on disk space 

• Automatic daily backups - no limit to the number of backups each day

• User-friendly graphical user interface (GUI)
