Data Centre services

South West Communications Group’s Data Centre provides dedicated server hosting and Internet access facilities including:

Managed servers - Rental of HP and Dell servers together with cabinet space, electrical power and Internet bandwidth (connected to server equipment via 100BaseT connections) is supplied by South West Communications Group.

This managed service comes with 24-hour monitoring and 24-hour support of server hardware, operating system (Microsoft Windows) software and managed firewall together with the option for automatic data backup.

Co-located servers - This service is similarly provided through the rental of Data Centre cabinet space, electrical power and Internet bandwidth to host the customers own server equipment along with 24-hour monitoring.

Internet bandwidth - This is available from 256Kbps to 100Mbps per connection. Unlike most hosting companies, there is no data transfer charge per month - bandwidth can be utilised constantly at full capacity without additional charges and is allowed to peak above the set bandwidth in short bursts. Browser-based bandwidth utilisation statistics are also available to customers. South West Communications Group’s multiple Internet connections ensure that its customers’ websites are always accessible.

ISP facilities - A range of Internet services are provided by the Data Centre ranging from Internet access (including dial up, ADSL/ADSL Max and leased line access options), providing email, anti-virus and anti-spam scanning and shared web space. As well as providing a wires-only service, South West Communications Group offers managed router and firewall solutions at customer premises for a fully managed solution.

Virtualization - Allows customers to run multiple operating systems on a single piece of hardware. Instead of using separate servers for a Linux website, a SQL database and an Exchange server, customers can run them all from one server and keep capital costs down. Depending on the type of application and the usage profile, consolidation ratios of 10:1 or more can be achieved. South West Communications Group offers a range of virtualization options to allow customers to get the most from their hardware resources.

Data backup - South West Communications Group’s data backup solution known as storeiP gives support to Microsoft, Unix, Linux, Apple Mac and Novell servers, as well as desktop PCs and laptops. Data is securely backed up to either South West Communications Group’s Exeter or Portsmouth data storage systems via the Internet using 128bit and 448bit encryption.

This automatic daily backup facility is available in 5Gb increments with no upper limit on disk space and no limit to the number of backups each day. It is operated via a user-friendly graphical user interface that contains quick and easy restore features.
